Its just not cricket

India’s current series in Australia, the umpiring decisions, the racist comment(s) controversy and now the IPL bids … cricket is always big news in India and more so now. Naturally, the news of the winning bids for IPL has been hogging headlines everywhere. Shahrukh Khan, Vijay Mallaya, Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta all wining the bids among others.

Naturally, the fate of the Indian Women’s Hockey team got mere mention. Returning to India from a training camp in Australia, the team had to spend a chilly wintry night in very shabby accommodation.

Also, they were unaware of a Rs. 5 lakh grant for purchase of equipment and so they had to shell out their own money.

So despite the appeal of “Chak De” and SRK and the women’s hockey team winning the hockey world cup in reel life, in real life, its cricket all the way.

Its not a sin to prefer one sport over the other. But the facilities or rather the lack of one over the other is widening and now, it seems only a miracle can bridge the gap...it is specialy sad since Hockey is our national sports and we were winners not so long back...

Like someone said on TV the other day "Cricket has time between over changes for advertisers to make money - hockey should think likewise". Avarice was always a sin anyway :)

Does football?

But the point is...the apathy of the sports authorities. Why can't they get their act together and do something about it? Why can't bigwig sponsors do something as part of their CSR? Not everything has to be for profit...(wishful thinking) :-(.

Ads between overs reminds me of the excess during the last world cup. One could hardly see the screen because of the sponsor buttons / tags and what not. I remember a stupid cricket bat icon which would trail after a soaring ball which might have gone for a six...I say might because we'd only watch the stupid icon!! And then India crashed out (and how) and we lost interest and were therefore spared the ads...

Its sad, but true. Blame it on Kapil Dev and the 1983 world cup win.

Every country have atleast one sport which is religion to them. But other sports are alive and kicking too...atleast they have proper facilities, trainers, coaches, equipments, grants etc...

What is the Sports Ministry in India doing? Not enough.
